Meissen's picturesque skyline forms an ideal backdrop for high culture and traditional festivals. The Neue Burgfestspiele (in German) in June are the highlight of the open-air season. Music, drama, dance and the unique atmosphere in the courtyard of the Albrechtsburg castle delight young and old every year. With the annual international Porcelain Biennale (in German), artists from all over the world present their porcelain artworks. Meissen also has its own festival dedicated to wine. At Saxony's largest wine festival (in German), 50,000 guests from near and far fill the idyllic Old Town. Taste the fine wines of local vintners in one of the picturesque courtyards. Let yourself be swept away by jazz, rock, pop or folk music on the 30 stages. Admire the elaborately decorated floats in the parade and the crowning fireworks display at the end of a very special weekend. During Advent, the Meissen Christmas (in German) makes children's eyes light up. In the historic market square and the adjoining alleyways, artisans offer their wares for sale and the vintner's mulled wine makes the frosty temperatures seem not half so bad. Theatres, galleries, museums and a multitude of other events make the city an attraction for culture lovers even beyond these highlights.
